10th of June 2019 was truly a dark day for Tamil Film and Theatre Industry for a
great humble soul that has made many happy in their lifetime through his fantastic
scriptwork – Kalaimaamani Thiru. Crazy Mohan Rangachari breathed his last on this very
Born in 1952, Mohan`s first stint began when he was studying Engineering. That is
when he wrote the script of “Great Bank Robbery” for an inter-collegiate contest. In
1976 he wrote his first full length play called “ Crazy Thieves in Paalavakkam” thereby
earning the moniker “Crazy” to his name. In 1979 he started his own drama troupe
Crazy Creation that has staged total of 6500 shows including the popular “Chocolate
Krishna”, that alone staged over 1,000 times both in India and abroad. He was also a
painter and had an avid interest in writing ‘venba,’ a form of Tamil poetry.
He was the master of one-liners, puns & word play. He was the King of Twitter
even before Twitter was born. Mohan was the only author on stage who brought out the
10-year-old child in every one of us while watching his dramas. As a writer, Mohan was
widely popular for his association with Padmabooshan Kamal Haasan which began with
‘Aboorva Sagodarargal’ in 1989, evolved and eventually resulted in movies that became
iconic for their comedy like “Panchathanthiram,” “Pammal K Sambandam,” and
“Thenaali.” He also penned scripts for several other super hit Kamal Haasan starrer films
like “Avvai Shanmugi”, “Vasool Raja MBBS” and “Michael Madhana Kamarajan”, besides
acting in many other movies.
The best tribute to Mohan would be to make people laugh again. With this in mind,
under the current COVID-19 lockdown situation, Tokyo Tamil Sangam along with Crazy
